Barn #28, Acrylic on Crescent Board, 30"x30", NFS

I'm still working on night scenes although this may be the last for a little while.  I've put a considerable amount of time into this one trying to get the mood and the level of detail right.  This is the largest painting I have done in quite some time - 30"x30", so I had the additional problems of scale to deal with. I'm also not quite sure it is finished - I will have to think about it for a few days.

Artist's Note:  Cameras hate the true darks in a painting.  The darks in the lower right corner are made up of a mix of browns, blues, oranges and reds that are actually quite lively in person. Also, the deepest blues in the sky are a bit less purple than it appears here.

Getting tired of winter. Can you tell?  This barn painting features the wonderful spring greens that I am dreaming of but that won't be here for another couple of months.Spring greens are so different from summer greens and autumn greens; it's amazing how you can tell the season just from the green of the grass and the trees.

This barn is in New Haven, VT perched on the side of a hill with a clump of trees growing up against one side.  The shadow side still has some of the colorful intensity of a freshly painted barn (although some patches have faded and peeled) while the sunny side has faded almost to gray.

Barn #26, Acrylic on Crescent Board, 15"x15", $500

A new barn. After a break, I decided to pay another visit to the subject of barns.  I love how they sit in the landscape.  In the winter, they offer reflective surfaces for the moonlight, making bright spots in an otherwise mostly blue-gray world.  I painted most of this piece during the 30 Day Challenge in January.  Today, I went back into it, covering a few patches that were too red or orange or white.  I think it works a bit better now. Artist's Note:  Crescent Board is an archival substrate much like mat board (about 3/16" thick) with watercolor paper adhered to it.  I gesso the board before I start painting.  Once I am happy with the painting, I coat it with an isolation coat followed by a satin UV-protective varnish.  The painting can be framed without glass.

Day 30 of the 30 Day Challenge. I made it.  Yesterday my brain totally quit - one day before the end.  I worked and messed and messed and worked but came up with nothing.  So my month-end total is 25 paintings.  I'm declaring victory.

I'll be taking a few days off from painting barns. But then I plan to use some of my challenge paintings as inspiration for larger works in the coming months. Who knows where my experiments will take me.

Day 28 of the 30 Day Challenge. In this painting I am continuing with my experiments in rendering the landscape using abstraction.  My efforts this month have really made a difference in how I tackle trees and grasses, wildflowers, and skies. I feel like I have gotten a little more confident about leaving paint alone once it is on the board, allowing for serendipity to play its part.

Day 27 of the 30 Day Challenge. I decided to go for another large painting.  I like the space for making interesting marks.  I wanted to give the sense of wildness in this field around an old unused barn.  I think the texture does that without the need for lots of individual grasses and stuff.  I like the abstract feel I'm getting with the rough brush strokes - it loosens up what would otherwise be a rather stiff composition.

Barn #22

Barn #22, Acrylic on Crescent Board, 15"x15", NFS

Day 26 of the 30 Day Challenge. I went for it today. I was feeling really inspired yesterday, so after finishing the 10"x10" I posted yesterday, I started this painting, which at 15"x15", is the largest painting I have attempted this month.  I am really getting into the broken paint and the wonderful effects I am getting. There is energy, variety, texture, and mood.

This barn sits in Grand Isle, VT along one of the main roads.  I changed time of day and the season to fit my vision.
